Nel cuore antico di Sondrio, tra le mura del cinquecentesco Palazzo Sassi de’ Lavizzari, batte il cuore culturale della valle: il MVSA – Museo Valtellinese di Storia e Arte. Non è solo un museo, ma una dimora aristocratica che apre le sue porte per raccontare secoli di bellezza, donata alla comunità nel 1922 per diventare custode dell’identità locale.

Varcare la soglia significa iniziare un viaggio nel tempo. Si può quasi sentire il profumo del legno della splendida stüa seicentesca al primo piano, prima di scendere nelle profondità delle cantine dove, dal 2020, la sezione Archeologia svela i segreti dei primi abitanti della valle, dalla preistoria al Medioevo.

Il percorso è una “tavolozza” di sei anime diverse:

L’Arte Sacra, un dialogo spirituale che espone capolavori dal XI al XIX secolo in collaborazione con la Diocesi di Como;
Il Fondo Ligari, un tesoro di oltre 800 pezzi che svela l’intimità e il genio della famiglia di artisti più celebre del Settecento valtellinese;
Le Collezioni, dove lo sguardo si allarga verso il Mediterraneo attraverso preziosi doni di illustri cittadini;
Il Novecento e la Storia, che offrono un palcoscenico ai volti e alle opere di chi ha reso grande Sondrio e il suo territorio.

Ma il MVSA non guarda solo al passato. È uno spazio vivo e pulsante, un “museo da 0 a 99 anni” dove i bambini giocano con il topolino Mussi, le famiglie partecipano a laboratori creativi e le scuole trasformano le sale in piazze del sapere. Con la sua biblioteca specializzata, il laboratorio di restauro e mostre innovative come l’esposizione online dedicata a Dante o il progetto Accordi di Paesaggio, il museo è un ponte sospeso tra la memoria e il futuro.

Una gestione oculata e lungimirante punta a trasformare l’idea di una struttura che racconta una storia polverosa in coscienza delle proprie origini riscoperta in un luogo che vuole essere una casa comune.

THE ARK OF MEMORY

In the historic heart of Sondrio, within the walls of the sixteenth-century Palazzo Sassi de’ Lavizzari, lies the cultural heart of the valley: the MVSA – Valtellina Museum of History and Art. More than simply a museum, it is an elegant aristocratic residence that opens its doors to tell centuries of stories and beauty. Donated to the local community in 1922, it has become one of the principal guardians of the valley’s identity.

Crossing its threshold is like stepping back through time. Visitors can almost breathe in the scent of the magnificent seventeenth-century stüa (traditional wood-panelled room) on the first floor before descending into the ancient cellars, where, since 2020, the Archaeology section has revealed the story of the valley’s earliest inhabitants, from prehistoric times to the Middle Ages.

The museum unfolds like a rich palette composed of six distinct worlds.

Sacred Art, a spiritual dialogue presenting masterpieces dating from the eleventh to the nineteenth century, created in collaboration with the Diocese of Como.
The Ligari Collection, an extraordinary treasury of more than 800 works that reveals the life and artistic genius of Valtellina’s most celebrated eighteenth-century family of painters.
The Collections, where the story widens beyond the valley towards the Mediterranean through precious donations made by distinguished local citizens.
The Twentieth Century and Local History, celebrating the people and achievements that have shaped the identity of Sondrio and its surrounding territory.

Yet the MVSA is not solely devoted to the past. It is a vibrant and welcoming place—a “museum for everyone, from 0 to 99″—where children explore alongside the friendly mouse Mussi, families take part in creative workshops and schools transform the galleries into lively spaces of learning.

With its specialist library, restoration laboratory and innovative exhibitions—including the online exhibition dedicated to Dante and the Accordi di Paesaggio (“Landscape Harmonies”) project—the museum serves as a bridge between memory and the future.

Thanks to thoughtful and forward-looking management, the MVSA is redefining what a museum can be. Rather than being perceived as a place where dusty stories are preserved, it invites visitors to rediscover their roots in a space designed to feel like a shared home for the entire community.
